This training plan focuses on everything you need to get started, and convert you from complete beginner to a fitter, healthier, successful 10km runner.
Training for the Boulder Bay Classic
This is a great training program that covers everything from what to wear, what to eat and how to train. It would be suitable for 5km runners who want to do a 10km or for those starting from scratch. Its a 16 week training program so jump to where you think you are comfortable in the program and get started. Consistent exercise is more important than running the big kilometres. I suggest you keep a running diary (time & distance) as it is great to see how you are progressing. Once you get going you may want to increase your training, add some walks or run/walk on those days the program does not have anything. Test yourself occasionally by trying a Park Run, there are 5 within Christchurch each Saturday morning. Nearer to Boulder Bay Classic 10km run you should look at running on the hills, the Halswell Park run has a a few of those!
Another great place is the Harry Ell Track just up from the Sign of the Takahe up to the Sign of The Kiwi, you could go halfway and come back via Victoria Park to start with. Treat yourself to a coffee at the Takahe cafe when you return. On Sunday morning, 08.30, you will see all the Christchurch Avon runners at the Sign of the Takahe ready to do a run and then they will be in the cafe afterwards, all welcome.
Watch out for a more challenging program coming out which will have the Saturday morning Park Run as an integral part of your training program.
If you need any training advice email your questions to info@chav.org.nz and we will get back to you.
